This is a bit of a random thought, but there it is. 🙂
Where did it come from then?
It came to me at church, this morning (at the time of writing this, which is some time ago now.)
There were several singers on the stage. Some were old hands and some were a bit newer.
One singer looked as if she was rooted to her spot, whilst singing.
It reminded me of a conversation I had with a different person when they had been on the stage with the worship team.
They had said, that they were so nervous, that they just stood rooted to the spot and focused on their singing.
The singer I saw today looked as if she was experiencing something of the conversation I had heard, on some level.
I don’t know if this was actually the case or not, but it still started a thought process in my head.
My thoughts went to, “If you could help this singer, then what would you do, say to her?”
Try to sway a little, perhaps?
Could you try to rock on your heel or toe, on both feet or just one?
Maybe you could just try to move your shoulders in a very slight twisting motion?
Or any kind of movement that might help to ease any kind of tension?
Then my thoughts kind of went, “That’s all external, how about something for the inside?”
The thought, “Try to cultivate a smile on the inside.” Then came about, in a round about way. 🙂
OK, the thought is there, but what does it actually mean to cultivate a smile on the inside?
Take a breath and smile?
Not so helpful if you are singing as you need your breath to sing. 🙂
But could you try to take a spiritual breath and smile on the inside, whilst still singing???
Could we all possibly do this whenever we are feeling a bit (or a lot) nervous about anything?
I am reminded of a scene in the film Sully. The film about the Hudson river landing, of an airplane.
In the scene, a young Sully was just about to take his first solo flight.
His instructor gave him a lot of instructions/reminders of what he needed to do.
Then he said something along the lines of, “and remember to smile, this is meant to be fun after all.” The young pilot, Sully’s face, then lights up, and you can almost see his thoughts of, “of course, I’m going to enjoy this” play out across his face.
Instead of feeding our nervousness, could we try to starve it, and feed Our Heavenly Fathers thoughts, of who He says that we are, and as such try to smile on the inside?
What we are on the inside tends to make its way out to the outside.
So if we can work on the inside stuff, then hopefully it will filter through to the outside, and then we could all be better off for it.
1 Samuel 16:7
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Luke 6:43-45
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
