Are you Willing to Take the Next Step?

This is a thought that keeps coming back to me, time and time again.

There are times when it is easy to take the next step, but then there are times when it’s not so easy.

The times when it’s not so easy can be when I would like to know what the next 3 or 4 … or even 10 steps are going to be, but all I have in front of me is the next step.
The next step that leads to ?????

I may well have an idea, or direction of where the next step will take me, so I’m not necessarily talking about taking a blind step (although sometimes we might even have to do just that). But I’m mostly talking about taking the next step, even though we haven’t worked it all out.

Sometimes things can just go a certain way. Things can just pop up in front of you on your path that could lead you in a particular way, if you are open to following them.
I’m not talking about following the wrong path. There can be many wrong paths along our way that we know we should avoid, no matter how tempting they may be.
But I’m talking about the paths that we have an inkling that could be good or fun to travel down, if we are just willing to just take the next step?

Sometimes the choice can be as simple as, take the next step….. or go nowhere. Just stand still and remain exactly where you are.

Staying still can sometimes be the right choice, but other times it can just simply be me refusing to move, anywhere.

Now if it is in fact The Lord my God who is asking me to take the next step (and I know that it its Him who is doing the prompting), then will I be willing to follow His leading?
It can be easy to answer yes to that question when there is no next step in front of you. But can we say yes to Him with our actions?
By doing what He is asking us to do?

John 10:27-28
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Matthew 21:28-31
The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Where/When was/is Jesus during the 3 Days?

OK, the title of this one is a bit …. or a lot confusing.

If the title is making your head hurt, then this might be one to skip and hopefully, normal service will be back, for next week. 🙂

The 3 days I’m talking about are the 3 days between Jesus dying on the cross and then being raised back to life again.

I’m going to share some thoughts that I have had about the 3 days. If you do read it, then please understand that it amounts to just a theory, (along with some bits we do know) that you then need to decide if there is anything to it.

Where to start???
The price Jesus paid on the cross.
When Jesus died on the cross, He did pay the whole price of that which separates us from God. (This bit is fact.)
But in my mind, the price for sinning is eternal separation from God.

Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So how can a price of eternal separation be paid in full in just 3 days?

If someone owed you a million pounds, and they tried to settle the debt with a single pound… Would you feel that the debt had been paid in full?
Well, I can’t help but think that I would have been short changed, by quite a large measure, if someone where to try such a thing with me.
Are you able to see my concern/thought?

I know that 2 Peter 3:8 states,
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

Now if I’m going to be a bit simple, I can apply the above to the 3 days…. and then come up with 3 thousand years of separation paid???
But even that seems like being short changed on eternity?
So was a greater price paid?? ….
Is a greater price still being paid? (Theory).
Whilst it has already been paid! (Fact)

Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Are you still with me??
Can I try to explain what I mean by, “Being still paid, whilst it has already been paid?” ???

Eternity is all time, as such, now is a part of eternity.
So is an eternal separation from God the Father still being paid now?
All at the same time that it has been paid.

We know that the price has been paid, for Jesus also tells us so.

John 19:28-30
The Death of Jesus

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

So am I losing the plot by asking “Is the price still being paid?” ???

For us mere humans, time is linear. We have a start in time, and we have an end in time. We start a new day, and 24 hours later we know that, another day has gone by. We travel through time at a constant rate, moment by moment. We can’t travel through time any faster than the rate we do. We can’t go into the future or into the past. We only have the now to live in.

Is God constrained by time in the same way that we are?
I do think that the simple answer to that question is “no”.

Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

The above verse is among many that shows us that time is different for God. We can only know the “is” (the here and now) but God can know the “was” and “is to come” as well as the “is”, all at the same time.
Time is different for God. Quite how that actually works out for God ….. ???
I just have more questions than answers, but I think it is suffice to say that time is different for God. (A previous post of, Is our God the God of Instantaneous Eternity? looks into these thoughts a bit more.)

I thought that I had a theory before I started writing this. Now I’m thinking that I’m just clutching at straws. 🙂

So what is this theory I have/had?
It’s below, for any who are still reading this.

When Jesus died, did He travel back to the start of time? (If you are going to make a payment of all eternity, then wouldn’t you need to make a start at the beginning?)
Did He then spend (is still spending) an eternity separated from God the Father?
Did He then travel back to the time on the cross where He stated, “It is finished”, or to 3 days later when He was resurrected and appeared to many people?
After this we know that He ascended to heaven and is now seated in Glory, with the Father.

If we do consider the when was Jesus, during the 3 days, then could we observe Jesus in three different places, from our point of view?
Could Jesus be on the outward journey, still paying the price?
Could Jesus be on the return journey back to the cross, having paid the price?
As well as knowing that, Jesus is seated in glory, with Our Heavenly Father.

I didn’t put a question mark after that last statement, as that one is known to be true.
But could the other two also be true, all at the same time?
For us mere human beings, we can only know the here and now. But do the rules of time that we experience, apply to God?

As I have already stated, this is mostly just a theory, with some bits that we do know. But if there is any truth to the theory, then it does put a different perspective to the three days, and just how long it actually was (is) from Jesus’s position.

If Jesus is still paying for the wrongs that I have done, or more to the point, that I am doing in the here and now, then could that change my view on just how much it matters of what I do, in the here and now?
If my doing wrong causes, yet another hot coal to be handed to Jesus, in the here and now, for Him to pay the price for, then could my not doing wrong, mean that He then has less hot coals to deal with???
Could this thought spur me on to try all the more to follow the path that I am being shown that much more closely, so that less hot coals are handed over to be dealt with from me? (Yes, is the answer to that one.)

When I first had these thoughts, I was a bit (a lot) overwhelmed by them. Until I was also reminded that, whilst the price could be, being paid, the price has actually been paid.
This means that what I am doing wrong, and will do wrong, has also already been paid for, by Jesus, by what He has done. (Or is still doing???)

Jesus does accept me, even with all that I have done wrong, and will do wrong.
It puts a new perspective on Jesus’s words, when He said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

I’m Waiting for my Wife to be Fully Healed.

My wife is disabled. She is a stroke survivor. I’m not stating this, in order to get any type of sympathy. (Don’t take this the wrong way, but please keep it to yourself. 🙂 ) I’m saying this because, that is just the way it is. If you would like to read the long story of how this came to be, then you can read about it here.

Both me and my wife, are still waiting for her to be completely healed. At this point, we have been waiting for over 23 years. The wait is a bit longer than we would like it to be, but we do still make the choice to praise and thank our Lord God, for His help and guidance to us in the here and now. Sometimes, this is not an easy choice to make.

My wife has told me, and several other people, that while she was in the hospital, she had a vision of Jesus, telling her that He would completely heal her. Our pastor and his wife, at the time that it happened, also prayed for my wife, whilst she was in the hospital. It was at one of the darker moments. But the prayer was said in such a way, that I half looked towards my wife, and thought, “Are you going to get up then?”

I’m sorry to say, that I did let out a small laugh when she didn’t get up. It was just such a bizarre situation. My wife was lying in the hospital bed, unresponsive, on a knife edge, of where she was going to be next, then my pastor and his wife were declaring, “Get up! Be healed, in the name of Jesus.” As I said, it was delivered with a something extra to it, so much so, that I did look for her to just sit up and expect (or want to see), her just walk out of the hospital there and then. But it didn’t happen, and (unfortunately) I gave out a small laugh.

I have heard that my pastor and his wife, fully expected my wife to be healed in that moment, and that it shook them, when it didn’t happen, at that point in time.

I’m still waiting for that prayer, and the vision that my wife had, to be fully realised.

The sceptic in me, would say, “Read the small print. It will happen when you and your wife get to heaven and we stand before Our Lord God.”

We do hope that the sceptic in me is wrong, and that it will happen sooner than that. But even if the sceptic is right, both me and my wife will continue to praise and thank Our Lord God for all the good that we do have, in the here and now.

Most of the time, we are both just getting on with life in the here and now. But every now and then we do ask again, “Lord, can we see the full healing of my wife, in the here and now?” It can be tough to even ask this, as an apparent answer of, “Not just yet.” still hurts. So for the most part, we just get on with our lives, quietly hoping, that today will be the day, that it will happen.

Just because things are not working out the way that we would like them to is not a reason to stop looking to Our Lord God Almighty! He is our Hope and Strength, in the here and now. We will try to continue to follow the example of Habakkuk, when he says, “yet I will rejoice in the Lord”.

Habakkuk 3:17-19

17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.

Can we Avoid Mistakes?

Who wouldn’t want to avoid mistakes if they could?
But unfortunately, mistakes are a part of life. Even Samuel in the Bible made his mistakes. One of them can be seen in…

1 Samuel 8:1-5
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice. So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

Now Samuel was a man who God approved of, there are two books in the Bible named after him.
But in the instance above, I believe, Samuel made a mistake. He appointed his sons to take over his ministry, even though they didn’t follow his ways.
The result of this action, ultimately, is that Saul was appointed king over Israel.
Although there have been good kings, there have also been some not so good kings (that caused a problem or two.)
Could these problems have been avoided if Israel didn’t have a king? If Israel didn’t have a King, then would Elijah and Elisha have been Israel’s leaders in their time, instead of prophets, that the King may, or may not listen to???

It’s easy to understand why Samuel did what he did.
He was getting old and was looking for a successor. The natural choice was his sons.
But they were not like him, which made it not such a good choice.
Was there some part in Samuel that knew this, but he did it all the same?

Can we sometimes make the mistake that Samuel made by taking the natural choice without consulting God?

What would God’s thought on succession be?

In Judges 8:22-23 we can see Gideon’s response when he is asked to rule over Israel.

Judges 8:22-23
22 The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

23 But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.”

Is this something of the heart of God?
It should be God we look to first instead of man.
A previous post of, When we go to church are we looking for Saul or Father? looks into this thought further.

So, can we learn from Samuel’s mistake?

If the natural choice has a niggle with us, will we still go ahead and do it, or can we look for a better fit?
Can we hear what our Father in Heaven’s choice would be, instead of the obvious choice?
Can we see and hear His choice, before we go and make a mistake?

Father,
Please help us to keep looking to You, for Your help and guidance.
If something is niggling at us then help us to come You, Our Lord God who knows what is best.
Help us to always hear and follow Your words to us.
Amen.

Is God Real???

A bit of a strange question to find on a blog site called, “Wannabe Christian Doorman”, but there it is. 🙂

Just to be sure, that you do know my position, on the question, ……
I KNOW, that God IS REAL!!!

So why would ask such a question?
One of the objections that I hear towards God is, “If God is so big, powerful and loving, then how can he allow …… to happen?”

The “……” can be anything, from personal circumstances, to world wide troubles. The list can be endless.

So, the question is put forward, “If God is so big, powerful and loving, then how can he allow …… to happen?”

Whenever I hear this kind of question, I always think that this is actually two questions rolled into one.
The first part of the question is, “Is God real?
The second part of the question is, “How can God then allow …… to happen?”
Which can then lead to a third question of, “Do I want to know him, when he allows …… to happen?”

I do think that all of the questions are valid, but that they should be looked into, as separate questions.

The main reason for this is, if the answer to the first question is “no”, then the second and third question’s, do not even need to be answered.
How can you ask a make believe God, why anything has happened?
Why would you want to know a make believe god?
Why would you want to even consider knowing a make believe god?
I’m hoping that you can see why answering the first question, just kind of makes sense?

So, back to the title of this post, “Is God Real???”

For so many people, the answer to this question, is a personal belief. “You can believe what you want to believe, and I can believe the exact opposite, and we’ll all be perfectly OK where we are!”
That statement can appear to be a good position, viewpoint in the here and now. But if we take a longer viewpoint, then will it even appear to be a true and correct statement to make?
I would love to answer/validate why I think this. But I also think that, to do so would be a distraction from the main question.

I have often found that, when trying to answer the main question, I can be bombarded with, other questions of… “And what about this, and what about that, and what about this, and what about …..”

This is why I will try to keep my distractions to a minimum, and try to offer some evidence, as to why I believe that, God, is in fact, very much so Real.

My first piece of evidence that I would like to bring is, “Mankind, has a creative spark, that is not seen anywhere else in the animal kingdom.”

In my mind, this is just an undeniable fact. Mankind can do so much more than any other kind of animal.
I know that animals can do great things, but it is, to my thinking, that they have been given these abilities, in order to live in the environment that they live in. (Please, understand that this only the short version of the argument.)
Mankind, just does that much more than any other animal.
There are very few places where mankind is unable to go. Places where we shouldn’t even be able to live. We have been to the depths of the ocean, to the top of the world. We have even set foot on the moon! A place so baron and devoid of life, that without the technology we have created, it would kill us in an instant. Mankind is different.
The device you are reading this on (unless you have a printed copy) is an item that mankind has created from materials dug out of the earth.
The electricity that mankind has harnessed to power the said device.
The computing power that runs the device you are using.
The achievements of mankind are just staggering, if you just stop, and take a look at them.
How is it that mankind can be so creative, and do all that it has done?

My answer to this is, we are made in the image of God.

Genesis 1:27
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

God is the Ultimate Creator (yes I know, some will say this is just my belief).
As we are created in God’s image, we also have a creative spark in us.
This to my mind, is why we are able to do all that we can do. This is why mankind is so different to the rest of the animal kingdom.

There is so much more I could write about this one alone, but I’ll try to stop there, and just ask, “Why is it, that mankind is so different to the rest of the animal kingdom?”
Do you have a different thought as to why why man is so different, that holds up better than, “It’s because we are made in the image of God”?

The second piece of evidence that I would like to present is, the world, and all creation itself. (You may have heard this one before.)
There is a balance at work in the world, that is just amazing. One entity’s waste product, is another entity’s life force.
We, as part of the animal kingdom, breath out carbon dioxide, which plants then take, and through photosynthesis then give back as oxygen. Which we, the animal kingdom need, to live.
Ones waste product is another’s life force!
This happens time and time again, when you just look into the natural world. To me, this just screams out that a creator, has made it this way, so that there is a balance, so that life itself, can exist.

Romans 1:19-20
19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

The third piece of evidence that I’m going to present today is, “Jesus Christ, The Lord God Almighty, incarnate as a man, who was killed on a cross, and then raised to life, three days later.”
I know, some would say that this should be the first piece of evidence, but I’m going with save the best for last.

If Jesus could be discredited, then it would have happened by now. Many people have tried, and failed to do so.
Lee Strobel is one such man. Lee Strobel was a devout atheist who became very unhappy when his wife became a Christian. (To put it mildly.) As an investigative journalist, he then set out to disprove Christianity, by disproving the resurrection.
Short version, he became a Christian. His testimony can be read in the book, “The Case For Christ”. If you don’t like reading, then you can watch it, it’s been made into a film.
To me, it’s one of those really good films based on real life. The evidence for Jesus being killed on the cross, and then being raised to life, three days later, is just staggering. If you will just look at it.

So there we have it, three pieces of evidence that, in my mind, declare that God, is in fact, very much so real.
There are many more proofs, also declaring that this is so.

But the question remains, “Will you acknowledge whether God is real, or not?”
I’m not asking you to ask God into your life at this point (but it’s going to follow on, very soon).

The question of “Is God real?”, is a question that, I feel, should be answered with an informed view, rather than the, “I don’t know” or “I don’t care” answers.

I do strangely think that an answer of “No, because …..” is a better answer than an answer of, “I don’t know” or “I don’t care.”
I will disagree with your answer of “No”, if that is your answer, but I will respect the fact, that you have a definitive answer, whilst debating the issue. (If I have the opportunity and permission to do so. 🙂 )
But I do understand and appreciate that you can disagree with my point of view, (beliefs). It’s called freedom of will, which we all have.

I’m starting to think that this could be one of those posts that I could try to write an entire book on, but I do think that now would be a good time to try and wrap things up. 🙂

I will try to finish by stating what I started with.
I Do believe that God is Very much so Real!
The evidence for this is just so overwhelming, that I can’t see there being any other possible option.

And now is the bit, that I told you was coming.
God is real. And He would Love to get to know you!
All you need to do, is to ask Him into your life.
The starting point could be to just ask, “If you really are real. God, then help me to see this. Help me to let You in.”
If you ask for His help, then He will be able lead and guide you on your journey.

Denial, can cause some Trouble.

Recently, my eyes have been opened up to the destructive force of a simple little word, “Denial”.

The latest viewing, is in the account when Uzzah, reached out his hand to steady ark, and then paid a heavy price.

1 Chronicles 13

Bringing Back the Ark

13 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul.” The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.

So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.

They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

11 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.

12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had.

One of the first things that “denial” does, is to hide away. “I’m not here, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
Perhaps, that’s why I’ve never seen it before? Because “denial” does such a good job at hiding. But I’m starting to see it now.

The “denial” that I see in the above scripture, is that the ark was being moved, in a manner that it was never meant to have been, and nobody appears to be aware that anything is wrong, until Uzzah pays with his life.
It’s so bad, that everyone was dancing and celebrating, even though The Lords anger was possibly burning against them, because The Lord was being disrespected, by the ark being placed on a new cart.

Was there anyone who had any idea that something was wrong?
Was anyone thinking, “This isn’t right?”
In verse 2 we can see that the call, that went out, also included the “priests and Levites”, so there should have been people who should have known, what the correct way to carry the ark was, and who it was who should have been doing it.

I have often thought that Uzzah was the sacrificial lamb that day, that allowed everybody else to go home. All were doing wrong, but Uzzah paid the price.

In Exodus 25:10-15, we can see the instructions for how the ark was to be made. Verses 14 and 15, give clear instructions.

Exodus 25:14-15
14 Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. 15 The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed.

The Levites were the only people to carry the ark, as David later reminded everyone.

1 Chronicles 15:2
Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.”

But back in 1 Chronicles 13, everyone seems to have forgotten this.
In verse 7, the mistake is made, and the ark is placed on a new cart.
In verse 8, everyone is celebrating before God, whilst disrespecting Him, by having the ark, on a cart.
Verse 9 is where Uzzah reaches out his hand, and in verse 10 he dies because of it.

Then in verse 11, we see another aspect of “denial”. David is angry.
Then in verse 12, David is afraid.
Then in verse 13, do we see “denial” achieve its main goal, separation from God?
David did not take the ark to be with him.

Why is David angry?
Is it because he doesn’t understand what is happening around him?
Which then leads to him to being afraid, which leads to turning away from God?

Is “denial” a serious thing that we need to be aware of, ourselves?
Do we come to trouble, because “denial” stops us from hearing what we need to hear or seeing what we need to see?
Do we need to do all that we can, to ensure that denial doesn’t stop us from hearing what Our Lord God is speaking to us?

There is one last thing that I would like to write about this. It’s the reason why I chose the 1 Chronicles version of this account. It’s verse 4.

The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.

I was a bit reluctant to bring this, because as I look at it, I kind of think, “This is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it?”
In part, I’m doubting my thoughts, even as I write this.
Is this part of how denial works?
Are you sure of what you are doing?
You’re going to look foolish?
Do you really want to do that?
My answer today is “Yes, I’m going to say this!”

In verse 4, I believe that I see denial again. Let’s have a look at the words again. “The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.”

Is this the root of where it all went wrong?
Because it seemed right to all the people?
What about what God was saying?
What matters more?
Popular opinion, or What God says?

Sometimes, Acceptance comes before Healing

I woke up with a movie scene playing through my mind this morning. It’s from A Monster Calls.

It’s the scene were the boy destroys his grandmothers living room.

Before you are too hard on the boy, you need to understand his situation. His Mum is dieing from cancer, and he’s not dealing with it, in any way, other than badly. Him trashing his grandmother’s room, is an outworking of his not coping. In the movie, when the grandmother enters, the boy’s face is a picture of regret, fear and sorrow.

The scene that played out in my mind was slightly different.
The boy just ran away, leaving his grandmother with the mess. She then purposely left it alone.
A friend of the grandmother then enters, sees the mess, and wants to clear it up. But, the grandmother stops them from doing so. From the grandmother, a clear message is sent, “The one who created the mess, needs to accept the mess, before it is cleared up.”

This is were the scene in my mind finished.
The grandmother loved the boy, and was not being mean in her actions. She just wanted the boy to be able to heal, which meant, facing up to what had been done. In the movie, this happens straight away (on the boys face), but in the scene in my mind, there was a delay.

It left me with a further scene of the grandmother, and her friend, sitting in the trashed room, having a cup of tea. The grandmother was clearly troubled, but at peace (in a strange kind of way). The friend just looked awkward, trying to find a clear spot to sit in, desperately wanting to tidy the room up, but not being allowed to do so.

I’ve been thinking about denial, just recently, and the problems that it could possibly cause.

In the scenes above, I think that we can see hidden trauma being released in an explosive way, in the trashing of the room.
In the scene that played out in my mind, we can then see, “denial” playing it’s part, by the boy just running away. Don’t look at it, run away, it’s not really there, it never happened.
If the room was cleared up, then could the delusion possibly be allowed to continue?
This would not be good for the boy.
As hard as it is, for the boy and grandmother (and also the visiting friend) the mess needs to remain, so that the boy can then face up to what has happened, instead of just brushing it under the carpet.

Facing up to hurts, can be a very painful thing to do.
Facing up to them with a Loved one, holding your hand and guiding your steps, may be a better way of doing it, rather than going at it alone.
We have a Loving Heavenly Father, who is For us, and wants the Best for us. If we have something that we need to deal with, that we are struggling with, then we can call on His help and His guidance, to help us, to get through it.

The final scene (that was not in the film) that ran through my mind this morning, was of the boy and the grandmother, making a start on clearing up the room, together.

Lord God,
If there is anything that we have been trying to hide from, for any reason, then please help us to look at it together.
Please be the Loving and Guiding hand, that can help us to make it through all things.
Our Loving Heavenly Father,
Amen.

Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

1 John 1:5-10
Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Can we acknowledge when we are not doing too well?

I nearly murdered my sandwich the other day. 🙂
(At the time this was written.)

It wasn’t the sandwich’s fault, it was just the final thing that topped me over the edge. (Or nearly.)

I was just trying to cut my cheese and pickle sandwich in half, but it was the wrong knife for going through the crusts. The crusts just simply looked at the knife and in effect said, “Ha, wrong knife mister. You aren’t cutting me with that.”

I just tore the crusts apart in the end, suppressing the urge to pound the sandwich into the work top and then throwing it straight at the window, which was closed.
It would have been a better option if the window was open.
At least then the birds would have been able to peck away at those blasted crusts, rather than it just make a mess of the window.

Fortunately I managed to surpress the urge to murder the sandwich and throw it at the window. The scenario burning through my head was enough to bring me to my senses.

I just thought, “Have things got so bad that I’m now about to murder a sandwich???” 🙂

I’m not going to share what brought me to this point here. (It would probably take too long, and could possibly end up making me look small minded and silly.)
But it has left me with the thought of, “Can we acknowledge when we are not doing too well?”

When we are not doing so well, then how do we deal with it?
Do we just try to ignore it, and then almost destroy a sandwich? (Or something else?)
Is there a better option that we could take?

Psalm 42:5

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

King David knew a thing or two about things not going too well for him, at times.
There are many Psalms where David pours his soul out.
He has times when he acknowledges that things are not so good, and then looks to God for his help.

Could we all try to follow David’s example instead of coming to the point where we just want you murder a poor defenceless cheese and pickle sandwich?

Lord God Almighty,
You are my Lord God.
Thank you that You are for me and not against me.
Thank you that You do Love me.
Help me to come to You that much sooner, before I start to do the daft and silly things.
You are my Rock and Fortress, and to You I look for my help.
You are The One who can keep me from falling and keep me out of harms way.
In You I can find Your rest.
My Lord God Almighty.
Amen.

Hear the Gentle Whisper

When it comes to hearing God’s words to us, then how well do we do?
What are we expecting?

As I have been pondering these thoughts, a certain passage keeps coming back to me.

1 Kings 19:11-13
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

_______________________________________

In the above scripture, we have the record of when Elijah had a powerful encounter with God!
So powerful, that he hid his face.

But what about the bit, just before he hid his face?
The bit, where there was a mighty wind that tore the mountains apart, the earthquake and the fire?
It seems to me, that it was a bit of a strange day. I don’t normally come across any one of them in my normal days. 🙂

But Elijah, was expecting, waiting for The Lord to pass by. (Verse 11)

But when the three mighty acts went past Elijah, it’s almost as if he was… “Naa, Gods not there.”
But when the gentle whisper comes, then Elijah hides his face.

The picture just makes me smile, three mighty acts, and it’s like, “naa, not there”, but at the gentle whisper, Elijah is then hiding his face.

The reason for this, is because God, was in the gentle whisper!
His Power, Majesty, Glory and Holiness was there, in the gentle whisper.

I think that it is safe to say that God’s hand was in the wind, earthquake and fire, in some way. They were three things that weren’t an everyday event, and worthy of being recorded.
But God’s presence wasn’t in, the three mighty acts, it was in the gentle whisper.

How many of us, would have been distracted by the three mighty acts, so that we would have then, missed the gentle whisper?
My hand possibly (probably) also needs to go up here, unfortunately.
It can be done so easily as, “Wow! Did you See THAT!!!”
…. to then miss the gentle whisper.

What matters more, the three mighty acts, or the gentle whisper?

What are we looking for, when we are waiting to hear Our God?
Mighty acts, or a gentle whisper?
How many answers do we miss, because we are looking for something different? Something Big and Powerful?
Do our own expectations stop us from hearing His gentle whisper?
Is this part of why we can so easily get carried away, instead of getting carried along?

How important is it to hear, Our Lord Gods gentle whisper?
Can we open our eyes and ears to His ways?
Will we See and Hear, His ways, and then follow His prompting?

John 10:27-28
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Don’t Put Yourself, Where you are Not Meant to be!

This is an account of an incident that actually happened. It doesn’t show the best of what cyclists can do, but it does demonstrate why we all shouldn’t put ourselves, where we are not meant to be.

There was a cyclist who on his journey to work came to a certain junction.

At this junction it was quicker and easier to go onto the pavement to go past it.

After a time the cyclist realised that if he went on the wrong side of the road for a very short space, then he could navigate the junction just a little bit quicker and easier.
No one was hurt or put out by the cyclist doing this, and thus a new way of navigating the junction was made into a routine for the cyclist.

Each day the cyclist would come to the junction, look to make sure that the wrong side of the road was clear, then just use the wrong side of the road for a very short section, of the road. Another day of passing through the junction at a better pace, without causing anyone any issues. …. ???

Until one day….
One day the cyclist was a bit distracted. Something was going through the cyclists mind as he approached the junction.
So instead of checking that the way was clear, the cyclist just went onto the wrong side of the road, as had been done, sooo many times before, and had now become the norm… only this time… a car was coming on the other side of the road…. The right side of the road!

DANGER AHEAD !!!

“Oh Dear!!???” (And a great many other things) went through the cyclists head. “What am I doing, and how did I get here???” Also went through the cyclists head.

The car driver, probably thought (and quite rightly so) many similar sorts of things.

Fortunately for all, there was enough space for the cyclist to pull to the side, so the car could pass by without incident, (other than both people thinking, “What is going on?”)

The cyclist then sheepishly made his way to the pavement, and then tried to fathom out, what had just happened???

It was soon worked out. The cyclist had been doing the wrong thing, and getting away with it for sooo many times that it had just become normal thing to do. The wrong normal thing.
The cyclist liked the quicker way go through the junction, and nobody was hurt or put out…. Until the day it all went wrong!
Because the cyclist was were he shouldn’t have been.
The cyclist, in a moment, vowed to never put himself in such a silly position ever again.

It would be very easy to read this account and then want to go on a witch hunt for the said cyclist and bring him to task for his actions. But no such hunt is necessary.
The cyclist knew that he had done wrong.
Repented of his wrong actions and vowed to never repeat, said action again.

Are there times when we go and put ourselves in a similar position to the cyclist?
Do we ever take a short cut with something, even though we know it’s not quite the right way to do …… ?
Do we then get away with taking our short cut for a time?
Can we then start to think that our short cut is a better way to do ……. as it had worked well for sooo many times in the past?
Will we come to a day when it won’t work??? …..
Will we then come to a moment of “DANGER AHEAD!!!” ???
Could we steer clear of such a moment by doing what is right instead of taking our convenient short cut, that could lead to …???
